Most of us, by now, have come to understand that we're going to live into our 90's or beyond. Modern medicine is making this bold statement easier and easier to realize. And it's not because of new and improved surgical techniques (although those have improved tremendously) or new and better antibiotics or vaccines (which are becoming more questionable). In fact, we health seekers will be living longer because the world is finally accepting what chiropractors have been saying for decades, "Living well is a matter of choice." Not everyone, however, is willing to make this choice. In fact, only about 10% of the population will do so. The fact that you are reading these words is a very good indicator that you are one of those 10%. For you and everyone else who do put the effort into making these changes, the benefits are numerous and profound.
There is an old axiom in the chiropractic world and it goes like this, "Find it, fix it, and leave it alone." This means that healthy living should not be an ongoing trip to any doctor but your personal educational journey on what it takes to keep a vibrant, healthy body and mind throught out all your years. We chiropractors were the first to alert the world to the dangers of hydrogenated oils over thirty years ago. We were also telling the world more than fifty years ago that smoking was a dangerous habit while between the years of 1930 and 1986, the AMA (American Medical Association) was advertising cigarettes and showing medical doctors promoting the habit in their famous Journal of the American Medical Association. This is not intended to be a contentious statement but one that is demonstrative of the difference between contemporary, allopathic medical practice and the traditional, health driven practice. The most important thing to remember is that preventative medicine is not "early detection of disease". It is educating our patients on the habitual lifestyle changes that must be made to remain as healthy and vibrant as the body is capable of being.
It is important to recognize that chiropractic is a profession dedicated to the promotion of simple, healthy lifestyles and habits. While we are educated as general medical practitioners and licensed in the field of "alternative" cures for common ailments, we are more accurately described as promotors of the "wellness lifestyle". But what does that mean? And, more importantly, how do we do it? Well, it's a matter of simplicity. Our bodies have not evolved as fast as modern society and it's concomitant frantic pace and processed foods. What we human beings need to do is take a step back and reassess our personal habits and lifestyle practices. Then we need to take appropriate action to eliminate detrimental habits and accentuate or add positive habits. And the best way to achieve this is by utilizing some sort of a coach who has taken the time to study and practice the healthy lifestyle.
